Sunday Scribblings #97: Fridge Space

One of my all-time favorite authors is Dr. Seuss, so I enjoy occasionally writing something Seuss-inspired. This week’s prompt seemed like the perfect opportunity!

Fridge Space (a la Seuss)

One quiet day
I sat watching TV
What a day to relax!
(But it wasn’t to be.)

I heard a loud knocking
Oh, who could be here?
I went to the door…
It was just as I’d feared.

He had come unannounced
(as he’s been known to do)
that Cat in the Hat,
and Thing One, and Thing Two!

Before I could stop him
He barged through the door,
Nearly knocking me, shocked and dismayed,
To the floor.

“Oh thank you for having us!
No need to fuss!
You just sit in your chair there
And never mind us”

To the kitchen he went,
With the Things at his heels,
Inviting himself (and the Things)
For a meal.

I quietly followed
To see what they’d do,
The Cat in the Hat
And Thing One and Thing Two.

He opened the fridge
And cried, “What a disgrace!
This fridge is a mess!
Just look at this place!”

“Where are the vegetables?
Where is the meat?
You have all this food here
But nothing to eat!”

“I beg your pardon!”
I said, in a huff
And I slammed the fridge shut,
Adding, “That is enough!”

But he would not desist
“Let’s just see what you’ve got”
(As Thing One and Thing Two
Grabbed some pans and a pot.)

“Say! You have green noodles!
A green leg of lamb!
And, what’s this?
You’ve even got green eggs and ham!”

“Some quite shriveled sausages,
Blue fettucini!
Just look at the fuzz
On that luscious linguini!”

“Let’s toss that out here
With this fuzzy beef stew,
And add to the pile,
This bag of… red goo.”

“Have you really no rations?
Not a broccoli or beet?
I can’t find a thing here
that looks fit to eat!”

At first I was shamed,
And then I got mad,
“It’s none of your business
my foods all gone bad!”

Then I shouted, “That’s it!
I can’t take any more!”
So I shuffled them out
And I bolted the door.

I watched through the window
As they crossed the bridge…

…then I took a deep breath
and I cleaned out the fridge.

I love it! Very lyrical, and I really enjoyed the inclusion of The Things. As a long-time Seuss fan--well-done.

Fantabulous, wonderful ... Ohhhh you're so clever ;) ... the added joy was remembering once buying a Dr Seuss figure where you pulled the cord and he asked "Does your mother know I'm here" ... you took me back to somewhere long forgotten, THANK YOU ;) (where's a publisher when you need one!!)

This is great fun! Did he find a red fish and blue fish in there?

Very good!

Mine was more pokoing fun at what I consider a silly prompt.

Thank you all SO much for stopping by and for the totally awesome comments. You're definitely helping to restore my confidence! And I'm glad to see I'm not the only Dr. Seuss fan, too. ;-)

Hopefully I haven't missed any of your entries this week. I actually spent all day yesterday clicking on Sunday Scribbling posts! I know I can't do that every week, but it was so, so fun, I couldn't resist! Just wish I didn't have this slooow dial-up connection.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to next week. You guys rock! Thanks again!
